Bind Injured; Could Miss Rest of the Year
An injury suffered during a June 13 workout has taken Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's Bind (Pulpit/Check - half sister to Remind) out of consideration for the June 18, $125,000-added Matt Winn Presented by Emirates Equestrian Federation (gr. III) at Churchill Downs and could sideline him for the year. Trainer Al Stall Jr. said Bind suffered a condylar fracture in his right front leg during a four-furlong work over Keeneland's synthetic Polytrack surface in preparation for his stakes debut in the Matt Winn. Bind breezed the half-mile in :49 3/5 under exercise rider Jerry O'Dwyer. "He worked like a champ," Stall said. "He worked like his normal self. He looked like a gazelle running down the lane, but he didn't cool out properly and there it was." Bind was transported later in the morning to the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington to undergo surgery. Stall said the prognosis for Bind's fracture is "very good" at this point. "It's non-displaced, clean, there's no trash," Stall said. "It's a kick in the teeth right off the bat on a Monday morning, but that's just how it goes." Stall said that the best case scenario for Bind would probably see him return to competition late this year or early 2012 when his stable returns to New Orleans' Fair Grounds. Even if the surgery is as successful as he anticipates, Stall said the colt would probably be out of training for 120 days.

TrueNicks Hypothetical Mating reports are available for breeders to run unlimited free reports on Remind. Click the TrueNicks logo to receive a TrueNicks report for your mare.
Here's a quick overview of the TrueNicks system and more reports to help you make the best breeding decisions:
|
What is TrueNicks? |
|
|
The TrueNicks system utilizes the database of The Jockey Club - the world's most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance - to produce a sophisticated rating based on all foals for a given cross. This rating is a score that reflects the degree of affinity between the sire and broodmare sire (or sire line and broodmare sire line) of the subject horse or hypothetical mating. |
|
|
How will TrueNicks help you? |
|
|
The TrueNicks system measures the true opportunity of sire and broodmare sire crosses. Unlike other nicking products, TrueNicks ratings are continually recalculated to reflect the latest Thoroughbred racing results. TrueNicks evaluates all international starters and stakes winners and, therefore, reflects real opportunity. |

Bind, C, 3, by Pulpit (AP Indy)
1st Dam: Check, by Unbridled 2nd Dam: Watch the Time, by Timeless Moment 3rd Dam: Innocent Lady, by Wallet Lifter
Fair Grounds, Mdn, 49,000, 6 f, 1:08, winning margin 9.5 lengths
Boss Lafitte won by three-quarters of a length over Golden Yank, while it was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third to Ablaze With Spirit. Boss Lafitte has now had 11 starts for 4 wins, 2 seconds and a third with the USA Stakes being his second in a stakes win behind the Grade 3 Transylvania at Keeneland in April taking his total earnings to $222,859.
Bind was offered as a yearling at Keeneland September in 2009, but the bidding stalled at $180,000, and he went home to Claiborne. The dark bay had compiled an eye-catching worktab, and went postward as the even-money chalk. After breaking cleanly, the three-year-old was allowed to settle into stride by rider Rosie Napravnik, and raced in third as Saracen (Orientate) gunned through a :21.39 opening quarter. Bind began to take closer order on the turn and came to Saracen's throatlatch as they straightened for home. Napravnik threw a few crosses at him and Bind responded readily, leveling off smartly while opening up daylight. It was a good start to the day for his connections, who also had Apart (Flatter) running later on the card in the GIII Mineshaft H. "We're tickled to death," said Dell Hancock. "We tried to sell him at the Keeneland sale, and I couldn't believe it when we didn't get the job done there. We hope we have some fun with him--we've sure been encouraged so far." Bind acted up a bit in the paddock, but Hancock wasn't worried. "He kind of got himself pumped up in the paddock, like he was saying, ?I'm the man.' He reminded me of Pulpit." Bind's granddam, the North Carolina-bred Watch the Time, was acquired privately by Claiborne in time for her to produce Fob (The Prime Minister) in 1996. In the meantime, her earlier foals War Thief (Lord At War {Arg}) and Prime Meridian (The Prime Minister) developed into graded stakes winners, and the mare later foaled GSW Watch (Lord At War {Arg}) and SW Remind (DeputyMinister) for Claiborne. Bind's younger brother by First Samurai sold at Keeneland last September for $150,000, and his dam was covered by Pulpit again last spring.

BETTER THAN EVER - 10 FROM 10
BETTER THAN EVER, unbeaten in nine starts as a three-year-old, took on older horses for the first time and put them to shame in the S$200,00 Jumbo Jet Trophy over 1400m at Kranji here today.
Having just turned four, the New Zealand gelding became the first horse in the Malayan Racing Association circuit to be undefeated in 10 races and the youngest to earn more than one million in prizemoney.
His comprehensive was his victory today prompted winning jockey Saimee Jumaat to declare him to be the best horse he has ridden. And the top Singapore jockey has ridden many a champion horse in the past, which speaks volumes of the regard he has for the four-year-old.
BETTER THAN EVER (French Deputy - Songfest by Unbridled's Song) finished 3 1/2 lengths ahead of WAIKATO who has won 15 races in Singapore and twice finished fourth in the Singapore Airlines International Cup against world-class opposition.
"The sky is certainly the limit with him. You have to try and keep pace with him as he goes about his business," said Saimee.

BETTER THAN EVER (French Deputy)
BETTER THAN EVER completed a clean sweep of the Singapore 3YO Challenge when he easily captured the Singapore Guineas, elevated to Singapore Group 1 status this year with increased prizemoney of S$500,000, at Kranji.
In so doing BETTER THAN EVER (French Deputy - Songfest by Unbridled's Song) also stretched his unbeaten career record to nine and set a record of sort for Singapore racing.
Having won the Singapore 3YO Sprint (1200m) and the Singapore 3YO Classic (1400m), the latter by seven lengths, in the earlier legs, the Laurie Laxon-trained gelding was the only horse the punters had their money on tonight.
So much so that the next best backed horses, ZAC MISSILE, started at $1396 on the win tote. Never before have we seen a horse race with such lobsided betting.
In the end, BETTER THAN EVER gave jockey Saimee Jumaat an armchair ride, leading from start to finish to win by 4 1/4 lengths in his first test over the distance which he covered in a time of 1:34.23, just 0.9 sec. outside JOLIE'S SHINJU's course record.
With a bonus of S$150,000 for winning all three legs of the 3YO Challenge, BETTER THAN EVER brought his earnings to pass the S$1m mark.
Saimee said he has no doubt BETTER THAN EVER will stay 2000m, and jubilant owner Jupiter Stable hopes that this time next year; their gelding will be vying for honour in the Singapore Airlines International Cup.
